Why this riff works
This riff is fun because you get a ton of mileage out of hammer-ons and open strings. Upstroke the A string, hammer A, hammer low E, downstroke palm-muted low E. Repeat. I love using open notes to give my left hand the ability to move cleanly to different positions. I love using hammer-ons because alternate picking is hard.
